We discussed common issues impacting this community, such as late diagnosis, stigma, and parent shame/guilt. Swiss Psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler first used the word autism to describe symptoms of schizophrenia, not autism as we understand it today. Autism always existed, but was first medically defined in the 1940s. Motor skills challenges in Autism can make everyday movements harder to manage. This can include difficulties with small actions like writing or using utensils, as well as bigger movements such as walking, running, or keeping balance. Some people may move awkwardly or have weaker muscles and posture. Repetitive motions like rocking or hand movements are also common and can help with focus or calming. These challenges differ for each person and may improve with time and support. Some problems autistic people face include stigma, where others judge or misunderstand them, and late diagnosis, which can delay support and help. Parents may also feel shame or blame, even though autism is not anyone’s fault, which can make it harder for families to get the support they need. In the United States, about 1 in 31 children has been identified with Autism, which is roughly 3.2% of 8 year olds has been identified with autism (2022). This number has gone up compared to past years, showing that more children are being diagnosed today.
