Driven by passion

The Autism CARES Act of 2024—now federal law—reauthorizes and expands the nation’s main autism programs through 2029. Initially passed by the U.S. House and later signed by President Biden, the Act provides $2 billion over five years to strengthen autism research, data collection, early detection, healthcare training, and services across the lifespan. It includes new priorities such as improving communication supports for non-speaking individuals, addressing autism and aging, promoting health equity, and expanding the developmental-behavioral pediatric workforce. Autism Speaks and other advocates urge timely Senate action to ensure these vital supports continue without interruption.

Focused on clients

The Act tackles stigma, shame, and the issue of late diagnosis by encouraging early detection, training professionals with empathy, and establishing community support that is developed alongside autistic individuals and their families, who are acknowledged as the authorities on their own lived experiences. By emphasizing autonomy, self-expression, and self-determination, the policy eliminates obstacles to self-fulfillment and replaces judgment with understanding in educational, healthcare, and public institutions. The inclusion of creative expression, sensory-oriented learning, and advisory boards guarantees genuine involvement and leadership from the autism community, alleviating parental shame and enhancing empowerment. In conclusion, this approach reinterprets autism through a compassionate perspective that values strengths, emotional experiences, and human potential, promoting solidarity, inclusion, and environments where autistic individuals can prosper throughout their lives.
